Pig farmers and rearers in Mizoram have suffered colossal losses of over Rs 20 crore because of the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) since February inflicting the deaths of over 5,430 pigs and culling of over 10,300 pigs, officers mentioned on Thursday.

The primary case of ASF in Mizoram was reported in mid-March, 2021, from Lungsen village in Lunglei district alongside the Bangladesh border and since then, the illness has resurfaced yearly.
Following the outbreak of ASF, the AHV division has declared varied villages and localities within the six districts as contaminated areas beneath the Prevention and Management of Infectious and Contagious Illness in Animals Act, 2009, officers mentioned.
With the quick spreading of the an infection, the division has barred the availability of pigs, piglets and pork from the contaminated areas.
